SOLVED. A+ sleuthing by m-b-w.
Looking at a Skoda Octavia Scout on Autotrader; It's tidy and at the right price, but what da boop is this thing on the dash? 114k is all fine and well, but not if it's been a taxi...

Looks like where a mic would mount. Probably a minicab.

My thoughts too, but I'm not sure they'd buy the 4x4 over the regular estate to do some minicabbin'...(?) Do you know what the hangy down bit is?

It might actually be a satellite radio thing? Or some strange aftermarket stuff.

Probably can be ripped straight out of there if you get the stock radio out.

If it works I'll keep it. This car is pretty much solely for mid to long journeys, so bluey might be useful

That's a good idea actually. Also note that the cupholder in the middle is the perfect size for a can of Red Bull.

Tomorrows weather is supposed to be shitty so I'm probably gonna be off work, therefore I'm building a shortlist of cars to go and see in the local area. As long as it's worth a look, I'll take a look. So far it's just the Scout and this one: http://goo.gl/nwgKCv

Looks nice! Not a huge fan of those hubcaps though. Good thing about Skoda is that the VAG partsbin is pretty massive.

Thank you for being nice, but it ain't nice...! Just a bog standard old Skoda, which happens to be perfect :) and yes, I'll be taking the trims off and be rockin some steelies for a while. I happen to have just bought a trailer from a VW parts yard, and he must've had around 100 full sets of VAG wheels and tyres in stock. I have a gentleman's agreement with him that if I were to buy a Skoda, he'd give me special price on any bits I need. I'm probably too trusting.

Haha, I'd totally rock one of those in the States. I'd have to do tons of stuff to it though.
Steelies FTW!

I've already considered a ride height drop and matte paint, and I've been looking at some hideous VW wheels NO NO NO NO THIS CAR IS NOT FOR THAT. But I will get a tow bar, roof bars, and a roof box. Exotic, I know.

Yup, the 5x114 pattern or something like that. I'd take some old white Audi wheels in a heartbeat.
Adapters are USD $200 btw.

That's an easy price. There was an 80, A3 and an A6 sitting in that yard so he may even have some old wheels. A quick sand blast, white paint and laquer, and suddenly boring Skoda is awesome Skoda. Dark metallic green works with white wheels, right? Food for thought, certainly. Right it's 2AM and I'm off to bed, chat later VAGbro.

Nice car. Registered in my home city of Carlisle. So it could of only come from Border Cars at Workington or Telfords in Carlisle. The former being the better of the two. It would of seen equal amounts of city, country roads and motorway usage.
Looked on the Skoda forum and no real issues on the Octavia Scout, Mk2 2004-13.
Should be a good decent car with plenty more miles in her.

I've been searching specifically for the 1.9Td as it seems to have bulletproof reliabilty, and a huge parts supply. Thanks for the input though, and nice to know it's a fairly local car! I'm just down the A69 near Hexham

It's a very solid engine though the 1.9TDi is a PD engine while the 1.6 and 2.0TDi are both CR engines. The CR is a smoother engine for towing where the 1.9TDi PD unit has a slight lag then comes in fast. Though it's debatable as to which is the better unit overall as it's horses for courses really.

Well this purchase is primarily for medium to long journeys, and is unlikely to tow although I will still fit a towbar. I'm buying it for the MPG and tax, as items in my current 'collection' aren't particularly good in either respect... (Read: all of them). So a bit of turbo lag I can handle!

She will swallow the miles like a hypercongriac swallows tablets. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by her.
